The Story Behind the Youth Charity Concert at Toowoomba

My name is Jenyu Shaw. I play the piano and the trombone. I am currently a year 10 student at Concordia Lutheran College at Toowoomba, QLD, Australia.

I'm going to have an AmusA piano exam in the coming mid to end of October.  My piano teacher, Hazel Noller, thought that it would be good to have a small family concert before the piano exam. It would help to build my confidence.

Further to this idea, my parents thought that maybe we could hold a small charity concert for family and closed friends. They were joking that they would look after at least 100 tickets. That means that I would at least raise $500 ($5 per person) provided that the venue is free and that there is a grand piano at the venue. I'm OK with the idea and I have the confidence to perform all my AmusA pieces from memory (approximately 45 minutes) before the exam. Together with my brother with his 25 minute repertoire (Grade 8 exam pieces) it's even more doable.

I further thought that it would be really fantastic if I could invite my musician friends at Concordia to join this charity event. For example, the first 20 minutes are for the classical piano music, the middle 20 minutes for the jazz music, and finally 20-30 minutes for classical piano music again.

We do not intend to make the concert very big as we know it is not an easy task to organise a big event. I understand the challenge in holding a concert is to get a reasonable size audience who are willing to pay for the tickets.  Since we will at least raise $500 dollars for charity, it is worthwhile to give it a go with this idea and hopefully to get more experience out of it.  I therefore spoke to the school teachers with the idea and I was really happy that they also liked the idea.

I've invited my buddies Emile Gavey, Scott Thamm and my brother Jaryu Shaw to join me in organising the concert.  We have met and discussed a few details. More information will be announced in the next post.
